Katy Perry Called "Ignorant" After Television Ad Offends Australians

July 6, 2017

Katy Perry has done it again. She has offended her fair share of groups and organizations, and now she may have offended the entire nation of Australia.

The 32-year-old pop star appears in an ad for a promotion with an Australian department store (Myer) tied to her upcoming Witness tour, which will swing through Australia in 2018.

At the end of the 30-second advertisement, Perry says to her dog "let's go chase some koalas." Perry's dog, by the way, is a teacup poodle named Nugget.

So why is that line so offensive? Well, koalas are endangered. Estimates say that less than 100,000 koalas remain in the wild, and some fear that there are only 43,000 koalas left in the wild. Furthermore, dogs remain one of the top threats for the endangered creatures. About 110 koalas are attacked and killed by dogs each year in Australia, according to the BBC

As a result, animal rescue and advocacy groups have spoken out against the ad. Animal activists have even called the ad "ignorant."

Yes, the backlash has gotten the attention of the department store. Myer now says that they are removing the material which references koalas from the 30-second ad.

But we have to say that in Katy's Defense, usually larger dogs are responsible for the attacks on koalas. Plus, the line about the koalas was probably written into the script. We doubt that Katy ad-libbed that in herself.

Yes, it's about a larger point. We totally get it. So it's probably a lesson learned kind of experience for Katy.
